Hey sexy, what a beautiful fit Friday!
Since it is a day after Thanksgiving I want to have a little heart to heart moment with you before I dive into the content. I want to say that I am extremely grateful for your listenership and thankful that you are here. Honestly, I love having you and having this podcast. It really is one of the most fun experiences in my business. This is for you, this is my gift to my community.
I’m bringing this episode to you from Breckenridge, Colorado, where I’m spending an amazing week skiing with old friends and new friends. My experience with learning skiing here inspired the topic of this podcast – the must do’s to master any skill. The skills I’ve learned in my body building career or in running are the same skills I’m applying in my business, and now in skiing. THE WAY YOU DO ANYTHING IS THE WAY YOU DO EVERYTHING.
1. GETTING A MINDSET OF FEARLESSNESS
Women are naturally a little more fearful than men. But in order to achieve anything in your life, you have to adopt this mindset of FEARLESSNESS. Once you become fearless you become LIMITLESS. Once you become limitless, you become UNSTOPPABLE at achieving any goal.
I figured out this skiing. A few years ago I had a horrible experience skiing, and now I was scared I might hurt myself. Then I asked myself: what is the worst thing that can happen? I can fall off the chair lift, run into a tree or break something. I thought about those things, got into a place where I was okay with them and guess what happened! There was this freeing feeling of just letting go of the notion I might fall or run into the tree, and I was just fine with that. I was in the state of fearlessness.
2. SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS AND BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF
When I tried skiing for the first time, I expected to be as good in it as in snowboarding which I practiced much more over years. It was a crazy expectation, it made me impatient and I ended up having a bad time.
I see a lot of unrealistic expectations when starting our fitness program. This happens also because we live in this instant gratification world. Unfortunately, our body doesn’t work that way. You just can’t get results in 5 days or 3 weeks. Our body has to adapt, learn new skills, create muscle memory and THEN changes happen. If you set realistic expectations and have patience with yourself, then you start having fun, you embrace new skills, move at your own pace and find joy in every step.
3. HIRE A COACH
The first time I went skiing, my friends just gave me the gear and some advice, and I tried to teach myself how to ski. I was falling every 2 seconds because I didn’t have the necessary skill set in order to turn, to twist my body and feel confident.
You can’t just google your way into a skill. When I was a fitness competitor, I had a coach showing me every step of the way, and it was a shortcut to success. Your coach is a must do when you are trying to master your skill. The coach is there to make sure you are following through, that you have information you need, that you are knowing and applying the skills you need to learn. They are there to correct you so you don’t hurt yourself, and to take off that doubt. In fitness, in business, you need a coach. When I wanted to launch a podcast I hired a coach. When I wanted to release the Makeover program, I hired a coach. Do you catch my drift here? Coaching is an essential piece of skill mastery because coaches are there to give you the confidence and tools you need in order to be successful.
4. RECRUIT A COMMUNITY
Your community is who you surround yourself with. They have to be like-minded, they have to be on the same skill-level and they have to be supportive. That will determine how much fun you’re having, how much support you get and how much you follow through. When somebody asks me if they can come and work out with me, the answer is no because we have to be on the same level in order to play together, to push each other and have satisfaction. If we’re not on the same skill-set level, somebody ends up being frustrated or hurting oneself. You community is EVERYTHING, but you have to be on the same page.
5. KEEP YOUR ATTITUDE IN CHECK
Your attitude determines how much fun you will have, and how much others will have fun working with you. If you are having a crappy negative attitude, you better check yourself. Yes, it’s hard to learn a new skill, we all know that, but nobody likes a whiner or a downer.
It’s okay to be scared, but DO IT anyway. A productive strategy here is to use affirmations. You can talk yourself into a more positive attitude by repeating a positive thought which has to be applicable in the moment. My mantras are “I’m a naturally good skier” and “I got the skills”. When you start saying nice things to yourself and work them into your mindset, you start to reprogram your brain and change your attitude for the better.
6. FOLLOW THROUGH
If you don’t follow through you won’t be able to master the desired skill. 90% of the success is just to show up. Be okay with the worst things that can happen on the way, just show up and that’s the only way to become great at something. I have big plans for mastering my skiing. I’ve already planned my next skiing trip in February, so expect more skiing insights soon!
